When to Hit in Blackjack

Hitting is one of the most basic moves that a blackjack player can make. When you take a hit, you get an extra card from the dealer to add to your hand. This gives you a chance to improve your score, but it can also cause you to bust and lose the hand.

In general, you should consider the strength of your hand and the dealer’s hand to help make your decision. You want to get as close to 21 points as you can. More importantly, you want to get a higher final score than the dealer.

When you have a strong hand and/or the dealer’s face-up card is weak, it is usually best to stand. But when the dealer is showing a strong card or your hand is weak, you need to be more aggressive.

Here are five common situations when you should hit in blackjack.

The Dealer Is Showing 7, 8, or 9

One of the best times to hit in blackjack is when the dealer is showing a 7, 8, or 9 in their hand. In this situation, you know that the highest amount the dealer could have is 18, 19, or 20. As a result, you would need a strong hand to beat them.

Remember, you just have to beat the dealer’s hand to win. This is more challenging to do, though, when the dealer starts with an already strong hand.

Having a strong starting hard also puts the dealer closer to 21. Depending on the casino rules, the dealer will likely win all ties. This can be demoralizing, but luckily the speed of blackjack means you will have another hand to play soon.

You Have a Total of 11 or Lower

Another situation to be aware of when playing blackjack is to hit when you have a total of 11 or lower. This may seem obvious to many players, but this is the safest time to hit in blackjack.

If you have 11 or lower total points, then there is no way for you to bust on the next card. Also, you have a lot of ground to make up if you want to beat the dealer. Your next card and the dealer’s face-up card will tell you how aggressively to play the rest of the hand.

For example, if the dealer has a high card showing, then you will likely need to stay aggressive. The only exception is if you get a 10-point card and end up near 21.

The Dealer Is Showing an Ace

One of the worst situations a blackjack player can face is when the dealer is showing an ace. The dealer will check their facedown card to see if they have a natural blackjack. This is also when the casino may offer the player a chance to take the insurance wager.

Personally, I tend to stay away from the insurance bet. However, if the dealer is showing an ace, then you need to play aggressively if you want to win at blackjack that hand.

Being aggressive, in this instance, usually means taking another card. The expectation is if you already have a hard total of 17 or higher. If that is the case, then it may be better for you to sit back and hope the dealer busts instead.

You Have a Soft 17 or Lower

There is a lot of terminology for blackjack players to learn. Two of the most important terms to learn are hard and soft hands. Simply put, a soft hand has an ace acting as an 11-point card and a hard hand does not.

Soft hands are usually a great time to be more aggressive. If you are lucky, then you can get a low-value card and, hopefully, get 21. But even if you get a 10-point card, you cannot bust.

In the latter situation, you can turn your ace into a 1-point card and stay in the game. So, if you have a soft 17 or lower, you should take the hit. But at 18 or higher, it is usually better to stand and let the dealer try to beat your hand.

The Dealer Is Showing a 10

The fifth spot on my list of times when you should hit in blackjack is when the dealer is showing a 10. As I mentioned above, your goal is to beat the dealer. This is harder to do when they are already showing a 10.

With a 10 on the board, you know that the dealer is likely packing a strong hand. So, you need to be aggressive if you want to beat them.

Your goal is still to get to 21, but that is not always possible. Realistically, you should be aiming to get at least 18 points to give you the best chance to beat the dealer. Depending on your starting hand, this could mean taking multiple hits.

When Should You Stand in Blackjack?

Knowing when to hit in blackjack is an important skill to learn. However, you also need to know how to recognize when you should stand in blackjack. Here are three situations when you should avoid taking a hit in blackjack.

Pair of 10s

Starting with a pair of 10s is a great way to begin a round of blackjack. However, this hand is one of the most misplayed hands in the classic table game.

You can split pairs in blackjack, and splitting 10s gives you two strong hands to play. However, splitting these cards is a mistake. Instead, you should keep them together and force the dealer to try and beat your 20-point hand.

Hard 17 or Higher

Another time that you should avoid hitting in blackjack is when you have a hard 17 or higher. Unlike soft hands, you can bust in these situations.

As tempting as it may be to try and get 21 in this situation, you should stand instead. Hitting when you already have such a high total is going to cause you to lose more often than not. By standing, you force the dealer to play against a strong hand.

The Dealer Is Showing a 4, 5, or 6

A third time to avoid hitting is when the dealer is showing a weak hand, such as a 4, 5, or 6. In these situations, you need to be careful not to be over-aggressive.

Instead, once you get to 15 or more points, you should stand. The dealer will likely have to hit, increasing their odds of busting. You win when the dealer busts as long as you are still in the game.

Blackjack is a simple game, but there are a lot of things new players have to learn to be successful. Here are three more online blackjack tips to help you become a better player.

One of the most overlooked factors in a player’s success is the site they choose to gamble at. The blackjack site you pick will determine the variations available to you, payout odds, and much more.

Picking the right blackjack site can help you get off on the right foot. I suggest trying Bovada for all of your blackjack needs. It offers eight different blackjack games to choose from and has dozens of live dealer games as well.
