The simplest way to define baccarat is as a card game where you have 2 or 3 cards. The winning hand is the one with the higher score. Baccarat is strictly a game of chance; there’s no strategy involved. It’s traditionally a high roller game, although recent versions of the game cater more to gamblers who are playing for lower stakes.

Here’s how to play baccarat

You start by sitting down at the table and buying chips. The card is played from an 8-card deck, and the cards are given point values, just like they are in blackjack. The point values are slightly different though:

You start by betting on one of 2 hands—player or banker. You also have the option of betting on a tie, but never place this bet. It’s a sucker bet with lousy odds, and I’ll explain that in more detail soon.

Depending on where you play, you might have other side bets to choose from, but it’s best to just skip side bets. They almost always have lousy odds.

Unlike blackjack, where you get a hand that you play against the dealer, there are only 2 hands in baccarat, regardless of how many players are there. In blackjack, each player has a hand to play against the dealer. But in baccarat, there’s just a player hand and a dealer hand.

As in blackjack, though, each hand has 2 cards in it to start.

Each hand is scored with a total of between 0 and 9. You arrive at the point total by adding the points for each card in the hand.

If you have a total of 10+, you just count the points based on what’s after the

In blackjack, you get to choose whether to take additional cards or not. For the player in blackjack, this is a matter of decision-making.

For the dealer in blackjack, it’s a matter of which criteria are present—dealers must always hit a hand with a total of 16 or less, regardless of any other factors.

In baccarat, though, both hands are played based on criteria. The player hand isn’t whim to the decisions of the player at all.

In baccarat, there’s a set of rules that determine whether a 3rd card gets dealt to a hand. A total of 8 or 9 is considered a “natural,” and if either the player OR the banker has a natural, neither hand gets an extra card.

If the player hand totals 6 or 7, the hand stands. If the player hand is a total of 5 or lower, that hand always gets an additional card.

If the player hand stood with a 6 or 7, the banker takes an additional card if the banker total is 5 or lower. If the banker has a 6 or 7, the banker hand stands.

Things start getting more complicated if the player drew a 3rd card.

The banker takes another card based on that hand’s total versus the player hand total, as follows:

• If the dealer has a 7 or better, the dealer hand stands.
• If the dealer has a 6, the hand stands unless the player has a 6 or 7, in which case the dealer gets a 3rd card.
• If the dealer has a 5, the dealer draws with a total of 4, 5, 6, or 7. Otherwise the hand stands.
• If the dealer has a 4, the dealer draws with a total of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. Otherwise the hand stands.
• If the dealer has a 3, the hand only stands if the player total is 8. Otherwise, the hand draws a 3rd card.
• If the dealer has a 2, 1, or 0, the hand always gets another card.

This might seem complicated. That’s because it is.

Luckily for the player, it doesn’t matter if you understand what’s happening here or not. The odds are the same regardless, and the player has no meaningful decision to make other than whether to bet on the player hand or the banker hand.

The hand that wins is the one with the higher score. If both hands have the same total, a player bet or a banker bet is considered a push, which is a tie. You get your bet back, but you don’t get any winnings.

If you took the tie bet, you only win if the player and banker hands have the same total.

The player bet pays off at even money. In other words, if you bet $100 on the player and win, you get $100 in winnings.

The banker bet pays off at 19 to 20 odds. In other words, if you bet $100 on the banker and win, you get $95 in winnings. (It’s like paying a 5% commission.)

The tie bet pays off at 8 to 1, which means if you bet $100 on the tie, you’d win $800.

All casino games have a built-in mathematical advantage for the casino. This is called “the house edge.” It’s the theoretically perfect amount that the casino expects to win in the long run from each of your bets.

If the house edge for a game is 1%, then the casino expects a theoretical win of $1 every time you place a $100 bet.

The casino gets this edge by paying off bets at lower odds than the odds of winning are.

In some casino games, the house edge is the same regardless of which bet you place. In others, the edge varies from bet to bet.

The Goal

The goal of Baccarat is to get a hand with a value of as close to nine as possible. Hands which have a value of eight or nine using the first two cards are considered a natural hand. If the first two cards total eight or nine, no more cards are dealt. Unlike other casino games, players can choose whether they want to bet on the player hand or the bank hand. There is also a tie bet, which pays much better than the other two bets. A tie bet pays 9:1 or 8:1, depending on the casino.

The Play

First, all players place their bets. Next, both the player hand and the dealer hand receive two cards each. If the player does not draw a third card, the bank draws for hands valued at five or less, and stands for hands valued at six or more. If the player has drawn a third card, the bank must stand on seven or more, and takes a third card for two or less.

If the bank has a two card total of three, a card is added unless the player’s third card was an eight.

If the bank has a total of four, the banker receives an extra card if the player’s third card was 2-7, inclusive.

For a total of five, the banker hand receives a third card if the player’s third card was 4-7, inclusive.

If the bank hand was a six, the banker receives an extra card only if the player’s third card was six or seven.

Once both hands have been given their cards, the hand with a total closer to nine is the winner. If there is a tie, players who bet on a tie receive a payout of eight to one or nine to one depending upon the casino.

Since the rules favor the banker’s hand slightly, the casino takes a rake whenever a player wins on the banker’s hand.

Differences Between Land-Based Baccarat and Online Baccarat:

In some land-based casinos, there are three player hands for every dealer hand. In this case, players may bet on any or all of the player hands separately. Generally, in online casinos, play is against a computer program, and there is no dealer, nor are there other players.

The Bets Available at the Baccarat Table

You have three possible bets at the baccarat table:

The player bet pays off at even money.

The banker bet pays off at 19 to 20 odds, which is the same thing as an even-money payoff minus a 5% commission.

If this sounds like a lot to you, baccarat might not be the appropriate game for you. In many casinos, baccarat is a high-roller game with minimum bets of $100 per hand. The maximum bet is usually $500, although it can be higher (in some cases, much higher) than that.

Can Baccarat Be Beaten?

Baccarat, like all casino games, can be beaten.

But only in the short run if you get lucky.

All the bets at the baccarat table have a mathematical edge for the casino. This means that in the long run, baccarat CANNOT be beaten.

There’s no strategy for baccarat because the only decisions you make are which bet to take. You don’t get to decide whether you hit or stand.

Card counting doesn’t work in baccarat, either. They’ve done the math, and you just can’t get enough of an edge from counting cards in baccarat to make it worth your while.

Varying the sizes of your bets based on what happened on previous bets doesn’t work in the long run, either. This is the most popular “baccarat strategy,” though.

You’ll find players keeping careful track of which bets are winning and how often. Some of them will jump on one side of the action or the other if it’s been winning a lot.

For example, you might sit down and play four hands of baccarat, and the player bet might win three of those hands. You might assume (wrongly) that the player bet wins 75% of the time, so you bet on the player.

Or you might assume that the probability of winning is roughly 50% for either side, so if the player bet has won three times in a row, a win for the banker is overdue. That doesn’t work, either.

You might raise the size of your bets after a loss to try to recoup your losses. That, too, doesn’t work.

The probabilities are determined by the cards in the deck. What happened in previous hands has a minimal effect on this in an eight-deck shoe. And the only reason past hands have ANY effect on the next hand’s probability is because it changes the composition of the deck (the cards that have been played are no longer in the deck).

But they’ve done the math. You can’t get an edge from counting cards in baccarat.

You might try the Martingale System, which is when you double the size of your bet after each loss. The problem is that the size of your bet gets too big too fast because there’s not much of a range between the minimum and maximum bets.

$100 – $200 – $400 – $800

If you lose three times in a row, you can’t make the next bet in the progression, so the system breaks down entirely.

The Martingale System doesn’t work with other games, either, but it’s especially ineffective in a situation where you have such a limited betting range.

What Is the Best Strategy for Baccarat?

The best strategy for baccarat is strangely simple.

Treat baccarat as a form of entertainment. You can’t win in the long run or make a living at baccarat, no matter what some of the slimy system-sellers might tell you. There’s no strategy for HOW to play your hand, so your best bet is to relax and enjoy the entertainment value of the game. In that respect, baccarat resembles slot machines or roulette.

Accept that entertainment costs money. Sometimes you’ll win at baccarat, and sometimes you’ll lose. You’ll lose more often than not, though, and those net losses are the cost of your entertainment. With this attitude, you’ll think of baccarat as being not much different from buying a book or paying for a movie.

Keep your entertainment costs as low as possible by placing the bet with the lowest house edge, every time. I’ve already mentioned the mathematical edge that the casino has over the player in baccarat. But I didn’t mention that it can be measured as a percentage.

This percentage is the amount that you’re statistically expected to lose from every bet on average over a long period of time. In other words, if the house edge is 1%, the casino expects to win $1 every time you wager $100.

Of course, that’s not what the actual outcomes will look like in the short run. That’s a predicted average that you’ll begin to see over hundreds or thousands of hands.

In some games, the house edge is the same no matter what bet you place.

But in baccarat, each of the three possible bets has a different house edge.

Your job is to pick the bet with the lowest house edge. That’s the best bet.

What Is the Best Bet in Baccarat?

The best bet in baccarat is a bet on the banker. The house edge for the banker bet is only 1.06%.

The player bet isn’t terrible, either. The house edge is 1.24%. It’s not a terrible bet when compared to other bets in the casino, but there’s no legitimate, logical reason for placing the player bet instead of the banker bet.

The tie bet, though, is not an attractive bet — even when compared to average bets at other casino games. The payout is attractive, sure, but the house edge is 14.4%.

Here’s one warning, too: Don’t rely on hunches.

You’re not psychic.

You won’t be able to predict what’s going to happen on the next hand regardless of how strong a feeling you have.

Just place the banker bet repeatedly, regardless of what happened in the previous hand.

But I Want to Win for Sure

Of course, you do.

Who doesn’t?

But if there were a way to win at baccarat for sure, the casinos wouldn’t offer the game.

They’re not in the business of paying out money to winners. They’re in the business of taking money from losers.

If you want a surefire way of not losing, I can offer you that — don’t play.

How to Get the True Count in Blackjack Mines Games Bonus

Card counting is one of those rare gambling strategies that can actually work. Most so-called gambling strategies are just systems relying on the gambler’s fallacy, and in the long run, they fail.

But counting cards actually gives a demonstrable, mathematical edge over the casino.

And the casinos know it.

As a result, they’ve instituted countermeasures to make it harder to get an edge. One of these countermeasures is the use of multiple decks. It’s harder to get an edge when facing eight decks in a shoe.

And the use of those additional decks requires you to convert the running count to a true count. This post focuses on how and why you need to convert the running count to a true count.

But first, I’ll explain some of the basics of card counting.

The process is deceptively simple, but it takes practice and discipline to make any money with it. For purposes of introducing these concepts, I’m going to use the “Hi Lo Count,” which is the most widely used card counting system. It’s also one of the easiest to understand.

If you’ve ever read an actual book about blackjack or counting cards, you’ve probably seen some reference to it. Harvey Dubner first introduced this system in 1963, but it’s as effective now as it was 50 years ago.

Stanford Wong covers the Hi-Lo System in his book Professional Blackjack, and Don Schlesinger goes into more detail about the system in Blackjack Attack. Beat the Dealer by Ed Thorp features a card counting system that’s almost the same as the Hi-Lo System, too.

Being able to convert the running count to the true count is a skill necessary for any counter using any system — but only if they’re playing in a game with multiple decks.

How and Why Counting Cards Works

Most gambling systems involve raising and lowering the size of your bets based on what’s happened on previous outcomes. Most of them don’t work.

Here’s why.

Almost all games feature independent, random trials. The probabilities don’t change based on what happened during the previous trial.

For example, you roll a pair of dice. The probabilities are based on the number of sides each die has.

Once you’ve rolled the dice, and you’re ready to roll them again, the dice still have the same number of sides.

The formula for an event’s probability is the number of ways that event can happen divided by the total number of possible events.

When rolling dice, for example, you have 36 possible outcomes. Only one of those outcomes totals 2, so the probability of rolling a 2 on a pair of dice is 1/36.

If you roll a 2, then roll the dice again, the probability of rolling a 2 on the next roll is still 1/36. It doesn’t go up or down based on what happened on the last roll.

But in blackjack, the probabilities change as the cards are dealt because the number of possible outcomes changes.

Here’s an Example.

• You’re playing blackjack from a single deck. The probability of a card being an ace is 4/52, or 1/13.
• You deal out two hands, and each of those hands has an ace.
• The probability of getting an ace on the next card has changed.
• For one thing, now there are only 48 possible outcomes — that’s how many cards are left in the deck.
• There are also only two aces left in the deck, so the probability of getting an ace drops to 2/48, or 1/24.

There’s a big difference between a 12 to 1 shot at an ace and a 23 to 1 shot at an ace.

Why the Aces and Tens Are Important

I used aces in the previous example, but I could have also used 10s. There are 16 cards worth 10 points in a blackjack deck — four each of 10s, jacks, queens, and kings. The probability of being dealt a card worth 10 is 16/52, or 4/13.

The 10s are as important as the aces, but you’re more likely to get a 10.

Here’s why that’s important.

When you win at blackjack, you get paid off at even money most of the time. The exception is when you have a two-card hand that totals 21.

That’s called a “blackjack” or a “natural,” and that pays off at 3 to 2.

Since the decks are shuffled and randomized, the aces and 10s might be disproportional based on where they fell in the deck. If a lot of the aces and 10s have already been dealt, your probability of getting a blackjack decreases.

But if you have a higher-than-usual proportion of aces and 10s in the deck, your probability of getting a blackjack increases.

If you bet more when you have a better probability of getting a 3 to 2 payout, you’ll wind up with a mathematical edge over the casino.

And counting cards enables you to track that ratio.

How and Why to Use the Hi-Lo Count as a Beginner

The Hi-Low Count, or the High-Low Count, assigns a value of +1 to the lower-valued cards in the deck and a value of -1 to the higher-valued cards in the deck. Mid-sized cards have a value of 0.

As you see these cards get played, you adjust the count according to which cards have already been dealt.

• When you see a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, you add 1 to the count.
• When you see a 10 or an ace, you subtract 1 from the count.
• For counting purposes, you ignore the 7, 8, and 9.

This gives you an idea of your edge at any given time, until the casino dealer shuffles the cards back in the deck.

When the count is positive, you have a proportionally higher number of favorable cards in the deck.

When the count is 0 or negative, you have a proportionally lower number of favorable cards in the deck.

You raise the size of your bets when the count is positive.

You bet your minimum when the count is 0 or negative.

It’s almost just that simple, too.

You’ll find different guidelines for how much to bet based on the count, but the easiest system I learned was to start with a single unit — your minimum. Then decide what your betting spread will be, keeping in mind that the bigger the spread is, the more aggressive you’re being.

The more aggressive you are, the more likely you are to catch heat from the casino.

Then you add the count to 1 to decide the size of your bet.

Here’s an Example.

• You’re playing at a table with a minimum bet of $5.
• You decide you’re going to use that as your base betting unit, and you’re going to have a betting spread of 1 to 4 units, based on the count.
• You’ll be betting in amounts of $5, $10, $15, or $20 — 1 unit, 2 units, 3 units, or 4 units, respectively.
• When the count is 0 or less, you’ll bet $5.
• When the count is +1, you’ll bet $10.
• When the count is +2, you’ll bet $15.
• When the count is +3 or higher, you’ll bet $20.
